Hello!!  My name is Shannon Taranto and I am the new OLHCC Alumni Board President for the 2008-2009 Academic Year.  I hope everyone is having a great and relaxing summer!!  I wanted to let all of you know about our Alumni Planning Workshop that is happening on this Saturday, July 26^th from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Moreau Center.  We encourage everyone to participate.  It is essential for us to hear your ideas, comments, and suggestions in order to keep the actions of our Alumni Board up-to-date with the changing needs of our college family.  If you are unable to attend on this day but have topics that you wish for us to discuss at our Workshop, please feel free to e-mail me at smd06@yahoo.com and I will be happy to express your ideas or concerns.  I look forward to seeing everyone there!! 

So the semester is finally over. YAY! Congrats to everyone who has graduated. You did it! This is a very important milestone in your life.

The Enrollment Services office had a door decorating contest this week. The theme was “Summer”. We had so much fun decorating the doors and just having a little down time with our co-workers. If you get a chance, you should stop by and check out the doors. I’ll post some pictures as soon as I get them.

On a personal note: I finished my first semester at UNO in the MBA program. After taking a year off from school, I was ready to get back. Even though I was excited about school, I am looking forward to summer with no classes. I plan on taking a vacation and spending time with my family and friends. I am including a picture of my puppy Roxy (the bigger dog). I love having her around the house. She is so energetic, and sometimes wears me out, but I wouldn’t trade her for the world. This picture was taken at my house when I was dog-sitting for Randy. His dog is a dachshund named Ruby. She is so loving and cute!

There’s about two weeks left before all of my assignments are due!  Talk about stress.  I’m taking 2 literature classes, and there is a research paper for each.  I figure I have to write at least 2 pages a day in order to get both of the assignments done and turned in on time. 

But considering there is so little time left until the end of the semester, I haven’t sensed much panic in the masses yet.  I’m bracing myself against the worst.  I just keep reminding myself that it will all get done.  One step at a time. One page at a time. Then finally Dum Dum dee dum dummmm duuummmm [That's the graduation song]

OOoOOk so on the 21st, the Literary Club is putting on its annual Literary, Art and Music Festival. Its a showcase of talented students and also the release of the Calliope magazine. Dr. Champagne has sent out a mass email to the student body giving everyone an opportunity to perform [sing or play an instrument] or read their poetry, short stories, reflections, etc.

Its very exciting because this will be my last LAM Festival, and as this year’s President of the Lit Club, I really want it to turn out perfect! I want to plan a small party for the club, but I’m kind of running low on ideas. So if y’all have any suggestions: COMMENT COMMENT COMMENT. lol

I’m also thinking of gag awards to give out. I just need to think of some categories. Fun Fun

Wow! We have had so many activities in the past few weeks.

The SGA/ Alumni crawfish boil was so much fun; we were able to enjoy a beautiful day with friends, family and CRAWFISH! The student organizations were selling yummy snacks and they even had a dunking booth. Watching the faculty falling into the water was priceless.
Sunday turned out to be a great day for the Golf Classic. The weather was perfect and the golfers were excited to play on such an excellent course. We were able to have a great time with our co-workers, students, family and friends; all while raising money to support the college.
Dr. Baglow had the Reel Faith Vocation Film Festival in the Moreau Center this week. A few films were shown, and we even had one of the actors join us for a Q and A session. This was a great experience for all of the high school students that attended. We will hopefully be able to have other events like this on campus.

So we just finished up the newspaper, and although there are some grammar issues and mistakes made, overall the hard work of the staff and everyone else involved really made for a great issue. I hope that it continues to grow after I graduate. In the year that I’ve been editor, we’ve become members of the Associated Collegiate Press, attended the Clinton Global Initiative University conference, expanded the newspaper to include an Arts and Entertainment page and Opinion columns, and really with a bit of interest and dedication the paper can grow larger and larger.

But it gets me to thinking… Because OLHCC is such a small college, it is sooOOOOooO difficult to plan anything extracurricular or have a successful club or organization like the newspaper. When people go to Holy Cross, they tend to arrive, go to class, and leave. There really isn’t the interest in the student body to invest extra time into other school related things. It can be disappointing to those who work so hard to plan and organize events and have poor turn-outs or other related situations.

There needs to be some enthusiasm for school participation. We need some SCHOOL SPIRIT. Maybe we can start a pep-club I bet a bunch of the faculty would join in as well!!! Can you imagine some of your teachers with pom-poms and tube socks?! Okay so maybe I took it a bit too far. But you get my point.

Ok so this is my first blog, and I feel it is appropriate to introduce myself. My name is Jillien. I’m an English major graduating [FINALLY] in May of this year. I tutor in the writing lab, and I’m trying to prevent my gpa from plummeting to a -2.3. These last few weeks have been some of the most incredibly busy, stressful, and all around frantic weeks of my life! I’m sure most seniors can feel me on that note.

Everyone’s been asking me what I’m going to do after I graduate, but the truth is that I can’t even see that far in the future yet. I still have a British literature paper due Monday, a Shakespeare paper due Tuesday, a few waltzes to learn for Dr. Gitz by Tuesday morning, all while commuting from Baton Rouge and all that personal jazz. Anyways… I’ll be posting [more like venting] my thoughts here occasionally. Thanks for reading.
