Hello Everyone,

It has been awhile since the last time I wrote. I just wanted to let everyone know the movie night was fun. We will have one again in the spring. Fall Fest is coming up in November. The semester is moving quick now and I hope everyone has registered for their classes for next semester. We are about half way through the semester but don’t give up on your classes. You need to give 100% all the way till you are finished with your finals. Halloween is Saturday and I hope everyone has gotten their costumes. I am running late this year. I tried to go get my costume tonight but they didn’t have my size, so tomorrow after work I got to go shopping big time to find one. Hope everyone has a fun and safe weekend.

Lifelong Learning?

July 21, 2009

Lifelong learning?  Does that mean you never get to graduate?

Well, not exactly……….it just means that your education is never finished.  Ever.

I’m Jim Curry and I’m the director of the newly created Department of Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning.  Our goal in Lifelong Learning is to make sure that you start early in life to make a habit of always learning, always increasing your skills and knowledge.  It’s a habit that can bring you a lifetime of satisfaction, on and off the job, no matter which career path you choose.

And it starts very simply with a simple question:  What really interests you?  You can find no more satisfying path in life than the one that keeps your interest and keeps your desire to always learn more.

So let me know what really interests you.  What lights your fuse?  What is it in this world that you can’t ever find out enough about? …………………and we’ll see what we can do about bringing it here to OLHCC in the year ahead.

Good news

July 21, 2009

Well I got good news this weekend, my pre-proposal (which is a summary document) for my disseration was approved. This means that I can start writing my first 3 chapters. You would have thought I had received an Oscar I was so excited! I have been dreading working on the literature review, I’m feeling rather intimidated by it, so I think I might start there and tackle the hardest part first…does anyone have an opinion on whether you start with the easiest part first (to build confidence) or just do the hardest part first? Anyway, I’m going to dive right in on it!

Welcome to my blog

July 13, 2009

Hello everyone.   I’ve decided to give this blogging thing a go, but thought instead of blogging about how wonderful OLHCC is, and it is that I’d write a little about my own experiences as a student.  I’m currently pursuing my Ph.D. in Higher Education and it has been a crazy journey.  I recently finished all of my coursework and am getting ready to start my dissertation (semester begins today for me).  It has been a long road with many sacrifices and I just wanted you to know that I can understand how you are feeling.  The crazy, want-to-pull-your-hair-out kinda days where you wonder if it will all be worth it in the end (especially when you get your tuition bill).

As we go through the upcoming weeks I’ll keep you posted on my own experiences in school and invite you to share yours.  I think if we form a little support group we can hopefully get through it together.  So for now…talk to later!

Notable niches in which to find thyself around campus.

October 16, 2008

Greetings on this 16th of October,

Perhaps you are having a haggard of a day,

Perhaps the Bursar’s next payment on the plan is due,

Perhaps the Saints fell to a 1-3 football team despite having two punt return TD’s in the same game,

Perhaps the Curly Fries ran out just before you ordered and now you get the Homestyle fries,

Perhaps you are a male and just saw a Matthew Mcconaughey movie,

Perhaps, you just lost a recreational basketball game to old men,

Perhaps the nursing midterm is today and you have a new tint of blue in a circular pattern under your retina holders,

On one of these such days, you may need a niche in which to find thyself.  You may need a place on campus to hide yourself from the fearsome reality that especially marks the month of October.   Well boys, girls, and children of all ages, I am here to suggest a few places on campus where you don’t have to beware.  These are a few of my secret places where I go:

1.  That couch in the hallway past the student lounge where that really old looking water fountain is.

2.  Way back in the library past all the window cubbies, you just take a left, and find three more cubbies, one has a computer, the other two are free, this is a great spot for doing work and avoiding the gossip of “studiers” who can be heard from the window cubbies.

3.  Way back in the library, go upstairs, and enjoy the silence of an area where noone goes…

4.  Way back in the library, act like your going upstairs and before treading up the stairs, notice a desk in the stairwell with a jolly green plant next to it.  This is a great place.

I hope you enjoy my secret spots on Our Lady of Holy Cross’s Campus.  They bring circumstances where one can seek Peace admist thoughts of your latest Facebook Zombie bite or Student Lounge Billiards loss.

Peace be with you!
