Lifelong Learning?

July 21, 2009

Lifelong learning?  Does that mean you never get to graduate?

Well, not exactly……….it just means that your education is never finished.  Ever.

I’m Jim Curry and I’m the director of the newly created Department of Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning.  Our goal in Lifelong Learning is to make sure that you start early in life to make a habit of always learning, always increasing your skills and knowledge.  It’s a habit that can bring you a lifetime of satisfaction, on and off the job, no matter which career path you choose.

And it starts very simply with a simple question:  What really interests you?  You can find no more satisfying path in life than the one that keeps your interest and keeps your desire to always learn more.

So let me know what really interests you.  What lights your fuse?  What is it in this world that you can’t ever find out enough about? …………………and we’ll see what we can do about bringing it here to OLHCC in the year ahead.

Welcome Back! (Almost!)

Hey!

It’s almost that time again :) The first day of class begins on Saturday, August 22nd. Don’t forget, if you haven’t registered for your classes yet, registration is August 18th and 19th from 9am-12pm and 3pm to 6pm in the Moreau Center. You will be able to speak to an advisor, register for classes, pay your bill, speak with financial aid advisor, set up your IQ web and e-mail accounts, and get your student ID card.

Are you a member of a student organization on campus? Would you like to share your experiences as a student with other students? Do you just like to write? If so, let us know if you would like to write for the OLHCC blog. For more information, or to get signed up to start blogging, contact Rebecca Kientz at rkientz@olhcc.edu or 504.398.2238.

Talk to you soon!

Good news

July 21, 2009

Well I got good news this weekend, my pre-proposal (which is a summary document) for my disseration was approved. This means that I can start writing my first 3 chapters. You would have thought I had received an Oscar I was so excited! I have been dreading working on the literature review, I’m feeling rather intimidated by it, so I think I might start there and tackle the hardest part first…does anyone have an opinion on whether you start with the easiest part first (to build confidence) or just do the hardest part first? Anyway, I’m going to dive right in on it!

Welcome to my blog

July 13, 2009

Hello everyone.   I’ve decided to give this blogging thing a go, but thought instead of blogging about how wonderful OLHCC is, and it is that I’d write a little about my own experiences as a student.  I’m currently pursuing my Ph.D. in Higher Education and it has been a crazy journey.  I recently finished all of my coursework and am getting ready to start my dissertation (semester begins today for me).  It has been a long road with many sacrifices and I just wanted you to know that I can understand how you are feeling.  The crazy, want-to-pull-your-hair-out kinda days where you wonder if it will all be worth it in the end (especially when you get your tuition bill).

As we go through the upcoming weeks I’ll keep you posted on my own experiences in school and invite you to share yours.  I think if we form a little support group we can hopefully get through it together.  So for now…talk to later!
